How You Can Reduce Your Grocery Bill With A Home Veggie Garden

More and more people are becoming interested in organic gardening as a safe alternative to store bought produce, which can contain all kinds of dangerous chemicals and may even present unforeseen threats with untested methods of genetic engineering. A lot of techniques for organic gardening actually don’t cost a lot of money. Keep reading for some useful tips on organic gardening.

To prevent your plants from getting shocked by a big change, get them gradually used to climate and temperature changes. Put them in the sun outside for a couple of hours during the first day. Throughout the week, you should increase a little at a time how long you have them outside. By the week’s end, your plants should then be ready for the big move!

Pick your plants with an eye to maximize the yield you can get. Traditional strains are often out-performed by hybrids that have been bred for cold tolerance or disease resistance.

Plant slug-proof perennials. Your plants can be destroyed by slugs and snails overnight. These garden vermin prefer plants with tender, herbaceous stems and leaves, particularly seedlings and young plants. Perennials that have thick, furry leaves and unpleasant tastes are less likely to attract slugs and snails. Several good choices include heuchera, campanula, achillea, and euphorbia.

If you are going to be doing some gardening, watch out for stink bugs, especially in the fall! These bugs like to eat beans, peppers, tomatoes, and many kinds of fruits. If they are left in the garden, they can do great damage to your plants, so you should do whatever you can to eliminate them.

Be sure to weed your garden. Those nasty weeds can turn your beautiful garden into a scruffy version of its former self. To aid in this venture, you might want to use white vinegar. White vinegar can kill weeds! Apply it full strength to any areas where weeds are a problem.

Bulbs will give you wonderful flowers that you can enjoy in early spring and right through the summer. Most bulbs are hardy and require little to no care in order to develop into beautiful perennials that will reappear each and every year. Various bulbs do not all bloom at the same time, and if you employ this knowledge wisely, your garden can provide freshly blooming flowers for half the year.

Remember to place a layer of mulch over the soil around your vegetables, approximately 2 inches deep. The mulch will help keep the dirt around the plants more moist. In addition, mulch will help you to prevent weeds. You’ll find this is a time saver since you won’t have to pull them later.

Give them a nutritious drink by using the water that you boiled your veggies in. In order to help acidify the soil for plants like gardenias and rhododendrons, you can use coffee and tea grounds. If fungus is ravaging your potted plants, sprinkle a bit of Chamomile tea on them, and see if it helps.

Start using these tips to grow your own organic food and help preserve the environment. You will also see more animals in your garden, because organic gardens are more attuned to nature.
